Over the past 16 years, there has been an increase in the consumption of digital products in South Africa, from 2 million to 25 million people using the internet in 2016. Various studies have proved the increase use of technology products amongst the new generation (youth), especially Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and others. Despite the consumption of digital products such as cellphones in the African continent, very few SMME’s add value to the development of innovative products and continue to consume finished imported products. Some struggle to unlock bottlenecks, especially with regards to the accreditation and patenting of their products due to the high barriers of entry. This continues to perpetuate dependency and stifle economic growth, hence the call to venture into the digital space through discovering and production of technology products.
